Cotswold Way Accommodation

The Cotswold Way

Uley

This small village lies between Kings Stanley and Dursley. This section of the Cotswold Way contains a couple of long barrows, including “Hetty Pegler's Tump”. Immediately prior to Uley, walkers can access the impressive Uley Bury hill fort.

Though a humble village, it appears that Uley is capable of producing characters of world-wide significance. One such character would surely be Moses Bendle Garlic, who was a cloth weaver in Uley before serving in the Napoleonic wars. On returning he found his industry transformed by automation and new, harsh, working practices. Whilst many succumbed to the new ways, or starved for lack of work, Moses shipped out to the Australian colonies and founded a new Uley, which he led until his death.
